About Us
Melanated Hair Nation (MHN) is a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering women through hair care. Our organization is open to people of all ages and backgrounds, yet exists as a safe space for African-American women to regain confidence and sense of self. MHN seeks to reach clients who have a medical hair loss diagnosis and are in need of a cranial hair prosthesis.
Our wigs are custom-made by our founder Dana Duhart-Irving. She will consult with you to make sure your wig looks, feels and fits perfectly. Most medical wigs are covered by insurance plans.
Our Why
Since the dawn of time, women's bodies have been scrutinized. Women of color, in particular, have felt the enormous strains of this policing on everything from skin tone and hair texture to physical shape, as they have in many other aspects of life. To the disadvantage of women and their self-worth, society has redefined beauty standards that are now unattainable. Our state of mind, not our physical appearance, determines our level of self-assurance. For many women, the relationship between self-esteem and hair is intimate.
Hair is profoundly embedded in identity in the black culture. Many women believe that going natural has given them more self-confidence. Melanated Hair Nation’s goal is to reach women where they are by providing haircare to promote outward beautification of their appearance which will then turn inward to increase confidence levels and self-esteem.
